Worm Variable is a development of MuirMcNeil’s Worm type system. Designed for Variable Font technology, its weights extend on a sliding scale from Thin to Fat with eight intermediate weight presets.

Worm Variable’s contours precisely match the letterforms of Worm, each of which have been shaped individually rather than being predetermined as the product of an overarching design code. The result is a type family that is co-ordinated as a loose association of idiosyncratic characters rather than a strictly regimented alphabet. However, the Worm letterforms are balanced harmoniously as a system by means of a consistent geometric framework that determines the construction of every contour, space and alignment.

All Worm Variable instances are designed to interact with one another in calibrated layers so that outlines can be mapped onto each other to generate a range of visual options when applied in print, interactive media or motion graphics.
